Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a small size, long-term care nursing center managed by nurses. For the study, a survey was done of domestic laws. five long-term care nursing homes, welfare systems for elderly people and two nursing homes in foreign countries (USA, Australia). Components of long-term care nursing centers include purpose, management, workers, equipment, financial affairs and service type.
For minimizing cost, it is suggested nursing centers with less than 10 beds to employ 1 nurse, 2-3 life assistants and 1 physical therapist on law relevant to elderly nursing home. Small size nursing centers can be used as a beginning and then gradually enlarged to middle size facilities of 40- 50 beds.
In scale of fee-based facilities, there was no limit because the contract was made between client and owner. The proper location of nursing centers is proposed as being within 1 hour from Seoul in order that families, relatives and friends can visit easily.
Finally, this study suggests that investigation of service development to manage long-term care nursing centers and identification of factors affecting desire to use nursing centers must be done. Marketing development will be needed for public information and success in management.
