Abstract
Purpose
This descriptive study was done to identify the rate of repeated falls in hospitalized elders and characteristics related to the falls, as well as characteristics of fractures resulting from falls. Method: Using a check list designed by the researchers, data were collected from October 15 to October 25, 2007 in a hospital in Seoul by examining the medical records of all elders, 65 years or older who sustained fractures from falls and were admitted to the hospital during the period from July, 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. Frequency, percentage, mean, and x2 with the SPSS 12 were used to analyze the data.
Result
Of the demographic characteristic, economic status, and of the physical characteristics, vision and hearing showed highly significant relationships to repeated falls (p<.05). But the other demographic, physical, and environmental characteristics were less significant. The rate of repeated fall for the elders was 37,5% and the rate of fractures as a result of falls was 61.9%.
Conclusion
To prevent falls in elders and thus improve the quality of their lives, nurses should focus on physical and economic status of elders.
