Abstract
Purpose The purposes of this study were to examine sleep hygiene and sleep quality and to identify factors that
influence sleep quality among community dwelling elders. Methods A descriptive correlational study was
conducted. Participants were 105 community dwelling elders from a metropolitan city. Data were collected using
structured questionnaires and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation
coefficients and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results Sleep hygiene of participants was generally good.
Sleeping quality was somewhat poor and the most frequently mentioned sleep disturbance was waking up to use
the bathroom. Sleep quality was significantly correlated with instrumental activities of daily living, depression, and
sleep hygiene. Health status, sleep hygiene, and education level were statistically significant predictors of sleep
quality and these three variables accounted for 26.7% of variance in sleep quality. Elders in good health, with good
sleep hygiene and a higher education level expected a better quality of sleep than their counterparts. Conclusions
The results of this study indicate that educational interventions are needed to increase quality of sleep among
community dwelling elders. Good sleep hygiene practices are necessary to increase sleep quality. Sleep
promotion intervention programs for community dwelling elders should be developed and evaluated.
