Abstract
Purpose This study was done to develop core nursing interventions for day care services for elders with dementia. Method: The nursing records from a center for elders with dementia located in In-Cheon were collected and analyzed. Nursing interventions found in these records and core nursing interventions from geriatric and psychiatric nursing presented in the Nursing Intervention Classification(NIC) formed the basic material for evaluation of nursing intervention records. Nursing domains and subordinate classes, and core nursing interventions for elders with dementia were then identified and 66 core nursing interventions were preselected for confirmation. In order to evaluate the validity of the core nursing intervention, preexamination of the data was done by two professors who had expertise and clinical experience in geriatric nursing and nursing information, This process was followed by an inspection of the items by a committee consisting of 10 nurses working in 6 different centers for elders with dementia. Results Nursing practice for elders with dementia was found to correspond to 6 nursing domains and 14 nursing classes in NIC. The domains were ‘physiological: basic’, ‘physiological: complex’, ‘safety’, ‘behavior’, ‘family’, and ‘health system’,
but not the ‘community’ domain. Fifty three nursing interventions (80.30%) of the 66 core nursing interventions were found to be valid, bringing the average correspondence rate to 90.38%. Conclusion These results can be considered a significant attempt to present standard nursing intervention records for use in day care services for elders with dementia.
