Nursing Needs of Elderly Patients with Spinal Anesthesia in the Recovery Room

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify the nursing needs of elderly patients while in the recovery room
following spinal anesthesia. Methods The participants in this study were 120 elderly patients had surgery under
spinal anesthesia between from December 12, 2011 and March 31, 2012. The instrument used was a descriptive
questionnaire on nursing care needs of patients in the recovery room. For reliability, the instrument had a
Cronbach's a of .882. The data were analyzed using frequencies, percentages, means, t-test, ANOVA, and
Cronbach's a coefficient with the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results Score for nursing needs of elderly patients
with spinal anesthesia who were in the recovery room was 2.47±0.82 of a range 1~5. The scores for individual
nursing needs were as follows: educational need (2.99±0.80), physical need (2.62±0.59), spiritual need
(2.29±1.12), emotional need (2.08±0.81), and environmental need (1.71±0.83). Conclusion While taking care of
elderly patients in the recovery room after surgery, nurses should provide enough information about the surgery
and anesthesia, observe thirst and coldness, and when explaining do it slowly in a loud voice. Spiritual care for
elderly patients in recovery room is also important.
