Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing Well-Being in the Elderly. The subjects of the study were 136 elderly person over the age of 65, living in Seoul, Kyung-gi. Choong-Nam, during the period from June 20, 2000 to September 15, 2000. The instruments for this study were the Personal Resource Questionnaire Ⅱ developed by Brandt & Weinert(1985). the Self-Integrity Scale by Kirn, Jung Soon( 1989), the Self-Efficacy Scale by Sherer et al .(1982), the Generalized Contentment Scale (GCS) by Hudson( 1982), the Barthel Index by Barthel (1979) for ADL scale, and the Well-Being Scale by Chang, Hae Kyung(1999a). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test. ANOVA. Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. The results were as follows : 1. The mean of total item scores of the Well-Being Scale was 3.50. 2. The relationships between general characteristics of subjects and well-being showed significant differences according to age, married state, educational level, religion, number of sons, number of family numbers, monthly income, amount of available money for current use, sources of money, and health status. 3. The well-being in the elderly showed significant positive correlation with social support, self-integrity, self-efficacy, GCS, and ADL. 4. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the most powerful predictor of well-being in the elderly was GCS. A combination of GCS, self-integrity, social support, and ADL accounted for 62% of the variance in well-being. From the results of this study, the following recommendations are presented as follows : 1. Further research is suggested to discover the variables influencing well-being. 2. In developing the well-being program, the above major influencing factors should be considered. 3. It is necessary to test for the effects of well-being nursing intervention.
